RIP Steve The Dream

Written on October 29, 2010 at 2:17 pm, by admin

The photos I posted today are from the memorial paddle out for Steve The Dream, who lost his life in a tragic surfing accident last Sunday. Lots of folks new and loved him as the pirate at Pamilco Jack’s or as a DJ, but everyone who ever surfed with him knows he always had a positive attitude and a hoot for every good ride he ever witnessed. We’ll all miss the guy who was there to share the stoke everyday. RIP brother.

UPDATE! From Surf Team Captain, Pat McManus, in Chile!

Written on March 15, 2010 at 5:03 pm, by admin

This update came to us before the earthquake. When the terrifying reports came in about the destruction in Chile, it was many days before we heard from Pat and found out that he and his family were unharmed. Now that we know they are OK, we are excited to share with you some of Pat’s experiences, (and some amazing surf shots) that he sent to us. Enjoy!

Ben & Steve

From Pat’s email:

My first week in Chile and I am reminded of what can make surfing here so interesting. The thing is that any given day one can’t be sure of what sort of wave they might encounter. Swells can rise and fall in a matter of hours, or a thick wall of fog and cloud can turn into skin searing sun in a matter of minutes.

Swells. Swells seem to arrive for no discernible reason and with out fanfare. There is no weather that can be attributed to a coming swell like a nor’easter, or a media circus hurricane. Even on the west coast where swells arrive similarly there is a surf culture so pervasive, and so well informed that the guy pumping your gas in Temecula is likely to know about any serious swell at least four days out.

No, in Chile it is usually much more a matter of showing up to surf and then realizing that it is eight to ten feet. Woops, and all I brought with me is my fish. and that’s how it will get you because the night before, or maybe earlier that day when you checked it was a lazy two to three feet. And as I said, the waves do this with such frequency that it happens without comment.

So having been in Chile for about a week I had had a couple of sessions, but most of my time was spent cleaning out our house, and putting sunscreen on the kids. A knee injury in November meant that I had only surfed about three times in the two months before getting here so I felt pretty out of shape. I commented on this one evening after my second session to my friend Elvis and he suggested that I should just surf on my big board for a few days.

So the next day a couple of hours before dark Elvis calls me and says the waves look fun at punta de lobos. Before I can get anymore info on what fun is he says “just come on It looks fun. I’ll see you out there.” and hangs up. Late in the day and a bit worn out from chasing the kids around I decided to follow Elvis’s advice and take my 7’6”.

Standing on the small island just off the headland that serves as the jumping off point I got a shock when a set hit and I had to climb up one of the morros to avoid getting washed off. It wasn’t just that the waves were a bit bigger than I had thought, but it was also dead high tide. Full force set waves were breaking on top of the jumping off point.

After timing two sets with a seagull squawking at me because I had climbed up next to her nest I make a dash across the slippery rock and jumped. I felt gook about my timing, at least I was able to clear the rocky island before getting cleaned by a three wave set.
In the water I shared the lineup with Elvis, his friend Samir, and one other local, getting a handful of waves before the sun began to set. Back on the point after surfing I found out another friend Carlos had shot some pictures with his compact digital.

Here are a few shots of a last minute sunset surf session.

Hurricane Bill Surf Forecast

Written on August 21, 2009 at 2:56 am, by admin

Hurricane Bill Surf Forecast
Thurs 20th August UTC
By MSW Hurricane Forecaster - Published on 20th August 2009 | Viewed 14167 times.

UPDATED Thurs 20th 8.30am UTC

Latest Detailed Hurricane Surf Breakdowns By Location

Too much love can be a scary thing. Hurricane Bill is showing worrying signs of becoming a full on bunny boiling maniac. Where 4ft@16 seconds looked fun and 9ft@16 seconds started to look intimidating current calls look downright ridiculous. Bearing in mind that a large part of the East coast doesn’t have the setups to deal with significant size these forecast numbers are moving beyond the exciting possibility of solid surf into a different realm:

Central Florida Peak: 11ft@16seconds potential for 15-20ft Waves*

Outer Banks Peak: 15ft@16seconds potential for 20-25ft Waves

New Jersey Peak: as above

New England Peak: as above

Nova Scotia Peak: 30ft@16seconds with storm force winds possibly stronger.

(*Potential is based on an ideal setup with deep water run in able to handle a swell this size which is unlikely to be the case at these locations)

So the story now is firstly one of finding any spot that’ll handle this kind of swell. Hard to imagine there’s much to the south that can do this and with the winds themselves now expected to impact on spots further north it looks like surfing this one through saturdays peak is perhaps a long shot IF it comes in as currently modelled. As you head further south down the Florida coast you should be able to pick your size as you head into the shadow of the islands, and of course post peak there will be, at some stage, a managable wave if there’s sand left on the beach to hold it, although these swells come and go fast so pick your moment with care.

Second story is that the storm, previously forecast to stay clear of the coast, now shows some probability of making landfall or at least bringing storm force coastal winds from North Carolina northwards with a strong probability of making landfall in Nova Scotia. The image below gives the latest wind speed probabilities:
wind-forecast-hurricane-bill

Probability of storm force winds.
© 2009 - NHC/NOAA

The caveat here for us as forecasters is Bill is still 1600 miles from the coast. It still hasn’t turned North West as strongly predicted to do so. It’s maintaining it’s category four intensity as predicted but this is Hurricane forecasting - it’s a blow by blow hour by hour attempt to keep an eye on pretty much the most powerful and destructive force in nature - it WILL be subject to change so plan for the unexpected and keep an eye here for our regular update. We’re pulling detailed revised information from the NHC and hurricane swell models from the NOAA every six hours which will be at your fingertips for free day and night as we watch this one in.

History Of The Pit

Written on July 8, 2009 at 11:50 pm, by admin

If you ever wondered how The Pit came to be what it is today, you will enjoy this short history of The Pit.

The Pit is the collective brain child of Ben and Steve, two guys who wanted to make a living AND live at the beach (and surf all day). The two got hooked on the Outer Banks lifestyle while waiting tables to pay for college. Once school was over, each felt the need to chase careers related to their respective fields of study; Graphic Design for Ben and Marketing for Steve. Their quests led to pursuits as far away as Los Angeles and Jamaica, but each yearned for the good ol’ days in sunny Nags Head.

One fine autumn day in 1993, the two were reunited as groomsmen in a friend’s wedding. During that weekend, an idea was hatched…. An idea that was, they agreed, so crazy, it just might work. And The Pit was born.

In the spring of 1994, with a handful of used boards and a few t-shirts, the crazed entrepreneurs threw open the doors of a little shack on the beach road and made a go of it. For the first three years, the store expanded a little each season, while standing by the concept that a surf shop should be a place to hangout, and should be friendly and unintimidating.

In the fall of 1996, The Pit made like a hermit crab, and moved into an old log cabin on the bypass road, three times the size of its beach shack. A shoestring renovation turned this hole of an eyesore into a whole new Pit. By the summer of ‘97, live entertainment, dance DJs, and light munchies made the place a true gathering place complete with a pool table and footsball game. Although the new place was bigger, it too, soon felt like a tight fit. Bands squeezed into the tiny dining room upstairs, and the surf shop struggled with 9 foot long boards in the ground floor retail space sporting claustrophobic 7′2″ ceiling heights.

In the spring of 1999 the pair converted the “surf theater” into a very cozy kitchen, and unveiled a progressive menu of California style wraps and quesadillas. But the best was yet to come. Less than a year later, during the winter of 1999-2000, the dynamic duo delved into two monumental projects simultaneously: building the dream 3000+ square foot surf shop, and morphing those low ceilings into venue sized 12′ ceilings.

A big loan from the SBA came late in the winter, and the race was on to beat the clock and get all this done before the summer season. With the help of a house moving company, the log cabin was cut from its pilings, rested on giant I-beams and jacked into the air. When she came back down, it was onto piling extensions achieving the new 12′ ceiling height. Across the parking lot, the new building had its own set of challenges. Although its humble beginnings were as Ben’s napkin sketches years earlier, the finished technical plans faced a tight budget and an even tighter time-line.

Although the surf shop didn’t open until August, the additions and renovations represented a dream realized. That dream that seemed so crazy, just might be working.

Today, The Pit Shop & Boardriders’ Grill is what the founders like to call, “All that… and a bag of chips!” From the huge array of surfboards and the “store within a store” called Skim City, to rentals and lessons, The Pit makes more dreams come true, for more people, all the time. And as for hanging out, the ever-evolving, world-class casual cuisine in the surf themed log cabin is continually complimented by recording artists drawn to playing the area’s premier venue for original live entertainment, down in the bottom of The Pit.

Whether you wanna look good or learn to catch a wave, this is your place. You wanna kick back with your crew, meet people, fill your belly, or catch a show, this is your place. We are truly living a dream. Our place IS your place. We are stoked to share it all with you.

If you haven’t been here yet, we look forward to meeting you.
If you have, thanks for helping us support our habit, surfing and life - Outer Banks style.

See you in the water,
Ben, Steve, & the Pit Crew

Reviews of Boardriders Grill

Written on June 16, 2009 at 5:02 pm, by admin

I found these reviews on one of those OBX sites (there are so many!). They were such a stoker to read, I just had to post them here for you to enjoy as well!

A Good Lunch 8/24/2008
Reviewer: Kristine from Pittsburgh, PA
My husband and I are always sure to get to The Pit at least once on our trip. They make a hearty, yummy, and thankfully cheap lunch. They added pizza this year, too, and it’s great. But get outta there before the frat boyz posing as surfers take over at night! Dude!

“S” Turns and Seize Her, Caesar 8/9/2006
Reviewer: BranchOfficeOBX from Northampton, PA
We have made the PIT one of our sure to eat at stops for 7 years now. We have never been disappointed. Check out there menu online THERE just to much good food on the menu to figure out what to get. www.pitsurf.com

Ultimate beach shack eatery 6/15/2005
Reviewer: Matt from Richmond, Va
We have eaten at the Pit several times over the past 3 or 4 years all at lunch time. The place has a very cool vibe going on. The space is small and seating is limited but the food is great. My children love their taco’s and my wife and I get one of their excellent wraps. Their is a game room upstairs while you wait for your food and their are a couple of TV’s in the dinning area that play surfing videos. It is the ultimate beach shack! and after you eat you can walk right over to the new & BIG Pit Surf Shop and walk off all of that food!!

Thanks to all our fans! -Ben

FREE SHOW: Zee Avi - Tues 9pm!

Written on June 15, 2009 at 4:44 pm, by admin

For some reason this show is not showing up in our list of events! But if you click on the “More Of The Pit’s Events” button under the list, you can see the original posting on Yahoo. For now, here’s the deets:

Zee Avi is a new artist signed to Brushfire Records (yes, Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records). We think she is the next best thing to sliced bread. In fact, I’d put dollars to donuts that she will be real famous real soon. This is going to be a great way to see here live in a small venue before your stuck with nosebleed seats in an arena next year!

Click the video to see what she is all about. Real accessible lyrics, voice of an angel. You are gonna dig it.

See you on Tuesday night, and remember this is an EARLY show starting at 9pm. Matt Hires will open (also worth checking out!)

Mexecono No-Class Reunion A Huge Success!

Written on June 14, 2009 at 6:00 am, by admin

Thanks to everyone who came out and made this event such a great time!

Epic performances by Splatterblast and Cashmere Jungle Lords were the backdrop of a reunion like no other, but it was the people… so many people that grew up together in our favorite bar, MexEcono, during the late 80’s and early 90’s, that made the evening unforgettable. Stories were retold, old photos passed around, and there was a grin on every grill all night long.

I hope you enjoy the photos posted here, and I invite you to send your best shots from the evening to me if you would like them posted here as well! Just email them to ben[at]… you know the rest.

Best night out in a long long time, no doubt!
Thanks again for all the memories!

This new website.

Written on June 5, 2009 at 10:07 pm, by pitben

Our first website went live in 1995 or 1996, I honestly can’t remember.  Built by longtime friends at Outer Banks Internet, we felt like we were on the cutting edge.  Two guys with a 500 square foot shack, 10 used boards and a couple tee shirts were somehow early adopters in the earliest days of the internet, and it sure felt good.

For those of you out there who have known us a long time, you know we have had a number of different versions over the years.  Our most recent site was created by the talented guy who shot and edited our DVD, Soundwaves a few years ago.  One-time pro hang gliding pilot and self-taught Mac man, GW Meadows is forging ahead in tech these days sailing the world and putting graphics on the sports fields on your TV.  We thank him for our most recent incarnation.

Today, however, we unveil the 2009 overhaul of our web presence, and we couldn’t be more stoked.  Integrating Flickr, YouTube, WordPress, and our show ticketing partners, this site brings the power of the latest tech and the hottest social media tools to bear in our ongoing quest to share the love Pit-style.  There is a lot to see here and a ton of information about who we are and what The Pit is all about.  But more importantly, this site makes it easier for us to share what is going on in real-time.  From photos of last night’s dance party to the skinny on Justin’s latest  lunch creation, pitsurf.com will be that bookmark you click to when you’re looking to reconnect with all of the fun, fashion, food, and funk that is your fond memories of The Pit.  So whether you are around the way or one of our far flung friends around the world, thanks for getting us here.  This site, like The Pit itself, is, and always has been, for you.

Well, enjoy the new site.  And shoot us and email, a tweet, or a message on facebook or myspace.  However you reach out, we are looking forward to hearing from you… and seeing you in the water.

This goes both ways.

With a title like that, I bet you were really wondering what you were gonna be getting into on this post… But, no worries, it’s nothing that crazy.  I am just letting you know that I want to hear from you, too!  If  I am gonna be sharing the good times that we are having here at The Pit, know that I would love to hear from you, too!  Pass me those great stories of what happened after you left here.  You could even send up the embarrassing photos of your crew at The Pit!  I would be glad to post them for all to see!  And let me know what bands you think I should be trying to get.  I am working on Rehab, Clutch, Agent Orange, Citizen Cope, Donavon and many more for you guys… but who else do you want me to get for you?  After all, this is your place, too!  I like it when it goes both ways!  Keep a brother in the loop!

Seeing as you clicked the link to read this post, I am gonna assume you are either a real big fan of The Pit, an overly curious individual, or that you are dying to see yourself somewhere on these pages (maybe all of the above).  In any case, this is your fair warning (or best news of the day, depending on how you look at it) that I am gonna be posting party pix of the nightlife here at The Pit!  Those photos to the left of the Pit Spit will be full of the good-time, late-night revelry that we enjoy here every night.  So… check back daily to see if you, or any of your friends, or that hot girl/guy at the end of the bar end up on our Flickr account! You are all fair game, partying like you do, in a public place!  You know you love it.  And I know you will sharing the love with everyone you know.  See  you on the dancefloor!
